Benoit Masse, Ph.D.

Benoit Masse, Ph.D., is an Associate Member at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. He is also an Affiliate Associate Professor in the Department of Biostatistics at the University of Washington School of Public Health and Community Medicine.

Dr. Masse has been involved in AIDS and microbicide research efforts since 1995. He is an author on more than 50 peer-reviewed articles in the areas of HIV/AIDS, other sexually transmitted diseases, and chronic diseases. Dr. Masse has significantly contributed to the design of several HIV microbicide research trials, including preparedness studies, safety studies (Phase I and II), and efficacy trials (Phase IIB and III). Specifically, Dr. Masse has been (or is actively) lead statistician on the following microbicide trials: HPTN 035 (Phase II/IIB), HPTN 050 (Phase I), HPTN 055 (preparedness), HPTN 059 (Phase II), and COL-1492 (Phase II/III). He was also a co-investigator and the lead statistician on the OMEGA cohort study, a large cohort of gay men in Montreal. In addition, Dr. Masse was the PI for the SDMC of the COL-1492 trial.

Dr. Masse has been a long-standing voting member of the Clinical Trials Grant Committee of the National Cancer Institute of Canada (1995-98) and of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (2000-present). He was also a member of the HPTN Microbicide Working Group and the HPTN ART Science Working Group. In the latter group, Dr. Masse is the lead statistician for the landmark HPTN 052 trial.
