Jim Hughes, Ph.D.
Dr. Hughes, Professor of Biostatistics, has been actively involved in research on HIV/AIDS and other STDs since joining the University of Washington (UW) Biostatistics department in 1993. He has been director of the UW STD Collaborative Research Center Biostatistical core since 1997 and previously served as associate director of the UW Center for AIDS Research Biostatistical core. Dr. Hughes has published a number of papers on statistical methods relevant to HIV and STD research and has collaborated on many analyses of HIV/STD data sets. Dr. Hughes joined the HPTN Statistical Center in 2000 and currently serves as lead statistician on the HPTN 039 trial (a study of daily acyclovir in HIV-negative/HSV-2-positive individuals for the prevention of HIV infection).
He is also lead statistician on two other major trials: (1) a Gates foundation-funded trial to prevent transmission of HIV in HIV discordant couples, in which the HIV-infected partner is also infected with HSV-2 (the HIV-infected partner is randomized to daily acyclovir or placebo); and (2) a community randomized trial of a pharmacy-based intervention to prevent STDs in 20 cities in Peru, funded by the Welcome Trust. Dr. Hughes has served on several DSMBs and is currently co-chair of the HPTN study monitoring committee. He is also a member of the HPTN STD Working Group.
