Dr. Self's research interests focus on the design, conduct, and analysis of HIV prevention trials, with a particular emphasis on HIV vaccines and on the development of novel statistical methods. In this area, he has published on a wide variety of topics, including statistical designs and definition of endpoints for vaccine efficacy trials, analytic methods for the elucidation of immunologic and virologic correlates of protection, methods for the analysis of HIV genetic variation, the optimal design of reagents for assays of cellular immune response, stochastic mathematical models for describing the dynamics of early HIV infection, methods for the analysis of differential expression and coexpression of genes, and methods for the analysis of comparative genome hybridization data.
Dr. Self currently serves on a variety of scientific advisory boards and review panels, including the following:
- Board of Scientific Counselors for the U.S. National Cancer Institute
- Scientific Advisory Board for the Terry Beirn Community Programs for Clinical Research on AIDS
