Thomas Skillman, Deputy Director of Shared Resources
Mr. Skillman is the Deputy Director of Shared Services and a member of the ELG. Mr. Skillman received a B.S. at the University of Maryland in 1974 and an M.S. in Computer Science at the University of Maryland in 1977. Mr. Skillman was an early developer of microprocessor-based instrument controller technology and applied his expertise to custom laboratory, sounding rocket, and satellite instruments. At the Boeing Company, Mr. Skillman served as the Business and Scientific Manager of a multimillion-dollar development project managing a team of 15 Ph.D. applied mathematicians and physicists performing computer modeling and analysis and customizing parallel processing computer architectures.
In 2000, Mr. Skillman received an executive M.B.A. degree from the University of Washington, at which time he joined a biotech start-up company, Epigenomics, Inc., focused on DNA methylation-based early detection of breast, colon, and prostate cancers. As Vice President of Information Systems and Operations, Mr. Skillman was responsible for the creation and operation of the information systems for Epigenomics. Tom led the development of sophisticated software tools for the efficient storage and analysis of experimentally-derived genomic methylation data. Mr. Skillman managed the sample collection team, which collects human tissue and blood samples from around the world, including participation in pre-clinical trial design, supplier negotiation, patient consent forms, logistics, and data handling.
